Money Talks: Why Financial Literacy Is a Key Feminist Tool

✨ Imagine a world where every woman knows exactly how to manage her money — and feels confident doing it. Let’s make that world real. ✨

Knowledge = power. And financial knowledge? That’s real power.

Financial literacy isn’t just about knowing how to budget or invest (though those are important, too!). It’s about giving women the tools to make empowered choices in their relationships, careers, and lives.

Because let’s be real: money touches everything.

Why Women Are at a Disadvantage

Here’s the thing — the financial system wasn’t exactly built with women in mind. And the numbers prove it:

💰 Women earn less: Women make about 89 cents for every dollar men earn in Canada. For racialized women, Indigenous women, and women with disabilities, that gap is often even more considerable.

👩‍👧 We take more career breaks: Canadian women are much more likely to take time off for caregiving, whether raising children or looking after aging parents. This affects income, job progression, and long-term financial stability. (Source: RBC Economics, 2020)

💸 Women retire with less: Studies show that Canadian women retire with about 30% less wealth than men — despite needing more to cover their longer lifespans. If women have them, their retirement pensions from CPP/QPP and corporate pensions are lower.

(Source: Mercer Canada, 2021)

We live longer: On average, Canadian women live about four years longer than men. That’s four more years our money needs to last — especially when retirement savings are already stretched thin.

When you add it all up, it’s no surprise that women are more likely to experience financial insecurity — especially later in life.

How Financial Education Changes the Game

But here’s the good news: when women understand money, everything changes.

💪 Financial literacy gives women the confidence to ask for more, to plan ahead, and to make decisions that align with their goals.

💫 It gives us the freedom — to walk away from unfulfilling jobs or unhealthy relationships, support our families, and live on our terms.

👛 It gives us options. When you know how to manage your money, you can build a life that feels good now and prepares you for the future.

Financial literacy isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a necessity. And it’s one of the most powerful feminist tools we have.

Let’s Make Financial Literacy Accessible for All Women

Every woman deserves to feel confident with her money, regardless of background, income, or life stage.

So, let’s talk about it, share what we know, and create spaces where women can ask questions without judgment. And most importantly? Let’s keep learning together. 💖
